Deadline for Proofs on Guatemala Case

GUATEMALA - The accusation against arrested
suspects of a crime that later unleashed a
political crisis in Guatemala must be
presented Wednesday, according to a judicial
ruling made known Tuesday.
The deadline for the Public Ministry to make
legal the process against eleven
perpetrators of the assassination of lawyer
Rodrigo Rosenberg on May 10 in the capital
thus expires.
Few days after the incident, it was
disclosed a video of the jurist accusing
President Alvaro Colom and several of his
closest collaborators, including first lady
Sandra Torres, of what might happen to him.
This led to a political turmoil in which
Colom's adversaries even improved the
occasion to ask for his resignation, but the
situation was brought to an end thanks to
large national and international support.
The judge in charge of the case, Veronica
Galicia, said the three months legally
granted to the Public Ministry to gather
proofs against those accused and present it
in court is over.
In September and October, 11 members of the
group that committed the crime were
arrested. According to declarations by three
of them, two pharmaceutical businessmen were
the master minds, and paid them to kill
Rosenberg.
One of them fled the country, and the
whereabouts of the other remain unknown. |
