Senior U.S. Official Arrives In Honduras To
Boost Tegucigalpa-San José Agreement
TEGUCIGALPA, - U.S. Assistant Secretary of
State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Craig
Kelly arrived on Tuesday in Tegucigalpa to
boost the fulfillment of the Tegucigalpa-San
José Agreement, a spokesman of the U.S.
embassy in Honduras said.
Advisor of Public Affairs of the U.S.
embassy in Honduras Charles Stevens said
that Kelly arrived in Honduras to express
the support of the United Stated to the
Tegucigalpa-San José Agreement.
Stevens said that Kelly will meet with
ousted President Manuel Zelaya, post-coup de
facto leader Roberto Micheletti, and
different civilian authorities.
This is Kelly's fourth visit to Honduras,
and the previous ones were intended to
establish and observe the fulfillment of the
Tegucigalpa-San José Agreement, which aimed
at ending the political crisis of the
country starting on June 28 with the
political-military coup against Zelaya.
On Nov. 17, Kelly met with Zelaya, who
requested the United States to have a clear
position regarding the political crisis in
Honduras.
Kelly arrived in Honduras 22 days before
Honduran President-elect Porfirio Lobo Sosa
takes office for a term of four years, after
winning the controversial elections of Nov.
29.
The Tegucigalpa-San José Agreement was
signed on Oct. 30. It established among
other points that the Honduran National
Congress would be the one deciding on
Zelaya's restitution in power, the
establishment of a transition government,
the creation of a commission of the truth
and a commission to observe the fulfillment
of the Agreement.
Stevens said that Kelly will return to the
United States on Wednesday.
