Plateado Coins No Longer Legal Tender Value
As of today those heavy, large silver coins
known as "plateados" are no longer accepted
at most retailers.
The coins have lost their legal tender value
and can only be exchanged, until March 31,
at local banks. After that, the coins can
only be exchanged at the Central Bank
offices in downtown San José.
The Central Bank has been slowly removing
the coins from circulation for months and
took the drastic action to remove their
legal tender value to completely remove them
from circulation.
Central Bank officials say the coins are too
large and not conforming with the rest of
the coins, as well they are hard to read by
the blind.
The coins affected are the ˘5, ˘10 and ˘20.
The only coins in circulation with legal
tender value are the silver ˘5 and ˘10
(these coins are light and thin, the gold
˘5, ˘10, ˘25, ˘50, ˘100 and ˘500.
