Panama: Increase of Cost of Life Predicted

PANAMA - The increase of the cost of life in Panama is much more an option much closer to the local consumers with predictions going to the raise of price of goods and services in 2010.

The National Authority for Public Services (ASEP) predicted an adjustment to increase in the electric tariffs starting in January for those who exceed 500 kilowatts per hour.

The productive sector expects an increase in the prices of inputs and fuel and this will be definitely transferred to the Panamanian citizens.

The local new minimum salary decided by the Executive will have a negative effect since it will definitely affect consumers.

Leaders from the Panamanian Industrial Trade Union said they are evaluating the impact of such factors to determine the magnitude of the price increases.

One of the elements generating a greater uneasiness is the basic family basket, which will suffer the pressure of the governmental measures.
