Guanacaste
reports
the
birth of
Kufu, a
male 45
kilo
dromedary
or
Arabian
camel (Camelus
dromedarius).
The
birth
was
reported
by Tania
Pivovarova,
a
veterinarian
at the
zoo, on
December
13 at
6am.
With
this
birth,
it
brings
the
total
number
of
dromedary
at the
zoo to
three.
Kufu is
son of
Pebels,
the only
dromedary
female
at the
zoo. She
was
brought
in from
the
United
States
while
pregnant,
giving
birth to
a male,
which is
Kufu's
father.
Pivovarova
said the
birth
was
natural.
The
veterinarian
explained
that she
was
worried
about
Pebels'
pregnancy,
as the
dromedary
has an
average
lifespan
of 25
years
and
Pebels
is 24.
The
birth
came
after a
13 month
pregnancy.
This is
the 35th
at the
zoo this
year,
among
them is
a
giraffe
and a
bongo,
the
largest
and
heaviest
forest
antelope.
