Avenidazo
Commences,
But
Without
The
Confetti
The
popular
"avenidazo"
commenced
in San
José
yesterday
evening,
but
without
the
traditional
paper
confetti
throwing.
The
avenizado
is what
the
municipality
of San
José
calls
the
festivities
that are
part of
the
culture
during
the
holiday
season
in the
downtown
core of
Costa
Rica's
major
city.
Music,
clowns,
dance
and
other
Christmas
traditions
are all
part of
the
activities
centred
in the
Plaza de
la
Cultura
and
surrounding
area.
The
confetti
throwing,
like it
was
years
ago, is
banned
and the
Municipal
police
were
vigilant
last
night
and will
continue
to do
so, to
prohibit
vendors
from
selling.
The
municipality,
in
announcing
the ban
several
years
ago,
cites
reports
of
damage
to eyes
when the
confetti
was
thrown
directly
in the
face of
passersby
and the
cost of
cleaning
up.
