El Salvador: Drug Trafficking, Violence
San Salvador - The National Civil
Police (PNC) warned on Wednesday of a likely
link of drug trafficking and organized crime
with some violent incidents in the last few
days in El Salvador.
"It is possible that drug trafficking is
related to the latest cases of violence,"
said PNC Director General Carlos Ascencio,
referring to the killing of four people,
including three minors, whose bodies were
found in a stolen vehicle on Tuesday.
Investigators are considering three
hypothesis, the strongest being organized
crime because of its similar characteristics
to other multiple killings registered here.
According to official figures, 2,900 people
have been killed so far this year, nearly
700 more than in similar period of 2008.
In a speech on Tuesday on occasion of the
anniversary of the country's independence,
President Mauricio Funes called on all
sectors, all living forces of the nation and
the State powers to join a crusade against
crime.
"I'm absolutely aware that the triumph
against organized crime and its multiple
forms is not a task to be accomplished by
any president or even a government alone,"
as it demands strict, strong policies
articulated with other regional countries. |
