EC, Nicaragua In Talks On Unfreezing Budget Support

Managua - The European Commission (EC) has begun talks with the Nicaraguan government to unfreeze some 100 million U.S. dollars of budget support, the EC said on Wednesday.

The EC froze funds responding to opposition parties' allegations of vote fraud in last year's municipal election.

EC Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General for External Relations Stefano Sannino began the talks last Friday seeking a "critical route" to consolidate bilateral relations, the EC said in a statement.

"These talks represent a open, frank and respectful process of dynamic dialogue, seeking a critical route to consolidate relations and contribute to Nicaragua's future social, political and economic development," the statement said.

The EC, the executive body of the European Union (EU), also said the EU would continue to support Nicaragua's education sector. On Tuesday, Nicaragua received 10 million dollars from the EU in aid to the education.
