Chilean
President Gets High Approval
Rate
Santiago - Chile's first
woman president has enjoyed the highest
public support as against three of her
immediate predecessors, according to the
country's latest public opinion poll
conducted by Adimark.
Michelle Bachelet's 73-percent support rate,
the highest posted since she took office in
March 2006, was higher than that garnered by
her cabinet members and that by her
government.
The poll result, released on Tuesday, showed
the Chilean government had an approval rate
of 57 percent from the public.
Of cabinet ministers, the highest approval
rate went to Treasury Minister Andres
Velasco with 64 percent and the lowest was
pinned to Health Minister Alvaro Erazo with
29 percent.
Defense Minister Francisco Vidal came second
among the ministers with a 52-percent
support rate, while the second from bottom
was Education Minister Monica Jimenez with
33 percent of support.
Compared with the previous poll, Interior
Minister Edmundo Perez Yoma lost 9 percent
of approval to drop to 39 percent from 48
percent, due to the parliamentary hearings
he was going through in the Senate.
Adimark conducted the poll between Aug. 3
and Aug. 27 by telephoning 1,109 people in
the main cities of the country. The poll has
an error margin of 3 percent.
