Guatemalan President Appoints New Education
Minister
Guatemala - uatemalan President Alvaro Colom
on Tuesday announced that Bienvenido Argueta
would become the country's new education
minister while reaffirming his commitment to
reforms in that sector.
According to information reaching here from
Guatemala City, Argueta replaced Ana Ordonez
de Molina, who resigned last Wednesday on
reported disagreement with the Education
Ministry's programs.
Argueta, an expert on social sciences and
education and a college professor, is a key
coordinator of the country's educational
reform programs.
One of the main objectives of the reforms
includes raising coverage and equity of
primary education in the country's poorest
rural areas, especially the enrollment of
the indigenous groups and girls.
President Colom reiterated his determination
to transform the country's education sector,
saying the changes would make "history."
