AH1N1 Death Toll 91 in Central America
Influenza virus AH1N1
has killed 91 people in Central America
since the virus outspread started in April,
says an official balance published Tuesday.
Costa Rica is the nation that registers more
deaths, 33, followed by El Salvador (17),
Guatemala (13), Honduras (12), Panama (10)
and Nicaragua (6).
The influenza virus was declared a pandemic
in June, since it spread all over the world
in just a few days and a second hit of the
flu is expected by the end of 2009.
During a meeting celebrated this week in
Panama, OPS representatives of the
Pan-American Health Organization pronounced
in favor of establishing a rapid response
team to confront emergencies in the region.
OPS expert Gerardo Alfaro also considered
useful to strengthen the network of services
in each country in order to prevent similar
situations.
According to World Health Organization,
vaccines against the flu are ready, but just
small quantities in some developed
countries.
The virus has already killed more than 2,800
people in 177 countries of the world. |
