Electricity Rate Reduction Decision Maybe
Tomorrow
Costa Rican have to wait a little long to
know if their electricity bill will drop by
7.2% as approved by the Autoridad Reguladora
de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep) and
challenged in court by the Instituto
Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE).
A hearing scheduled for last Friday did not
result in any decision, as judge Grace
Loaiza, decided to put off the hearing until
tomorrow, Monday.
The Aresep approved the rate decreased the
week earlier contrary to ICE's protest that
the reduction would impact negatively the
state institution.
The reduction was to have taken effect on
September 1.
However, the implementation of the rate
reduction was suspended by the court as it
prepares to hear the arguments by ICE
against any such reduction.
The reduction decision by the Aresep came
after the Cámara de Industrias presented the
government regulator compelling evidence
that ICE would be spending half of its
budget for electricity generation for 2009
and as such customers should be compensated.
ICE argues that the reduction would limit
the institution from investing in
infrastructure and being able to provide
electrical energy without interruptions.
Witness on both sides of the argument are
expected to take the stand on Monday. |
