Chilean Police Arrest 29 Drug Dealers In Massive Operation

Santiago - Chilean police arrested 29 drug dealers on Friday during a search of 35 homes across three neighborhoods in the capital city.

The search, described as the largest ever in the country, was launched on tips from non-governmental organizations.

Some 400 officers took part in the search, codenamed "Carmina South," which was aimed at taking drug dealers off the streets before the nation's independence day celebrations, Armed Police Captain Monica Herrera told reporters.

Officers from the Investigative Police department also participated in the operation.

The Chilean Independence Day falls on Sept. 18.

The detainees were held in the Armed Police and Investigative Police facilities prior to formal prosecution.

Police in Santiago might conduct more large-scale home searches to beef up anti-drug efforts, law enforcement authorities said.
