Venezuela: Fight to the End in World Baseball

Caracas - Without any Major League Baseball players in its national team, Venezuela aspires to finish among the first eight, said local high official of the Venezuelan National Baseball Federation, Edwin Zerpa here Friday.

In an official statement, Zerpstated that the initial objective was to integrate a baseball team with players who have contracts with organizations endorsed by the US superior circuits, but it was impossible for the high insurance costs demanded for their participation.

Without MLB names, our team is formed by men that are willing to give their best to leave the name of Venezuela very high, he pointed out.

The Venezuelan team participates in a tournament in Italy, next to the local team, Cuba and Chinese Taipei, previous to the 38th World Baseball Championship that will be played in seven European nations from September 9 to 27, with 22 countries.

The first round will have as scenarios Barcelona (Spain), Prague (Czech Republic), Zagreb (Croatia), Stockholm (Sweden) and Regensburg (Germany), this last headquarters of the Venezuelan team next to United States, China and Germany.

The following phase will be played in Italy and Holland, from September 13 to 20, with the teams concluding in the first two positions of each group and the best third places. The semifinal stage will be played in Italy, from September 22 to 27, with eight teams.

The commitments of Venezuela in the first round are on Thursday 10 in a match against United States, on Friday 11 against China and closes its participation on Saturday 12 before Germany.
