Heredia Commuter Train And Bus Collide
The Heredia - San José commuter train that
began operating last month has been plagued
with problems, the latest a collision
between the train and a bus, that injured
eight.
The accident occurred about 6:30am Tuesday
when the train hit a bus in an accident
about 100 metres from the Calderón Guardia
hospital, where the injured were treated.
Cruz Roja (Red Cross) attendants responding
to the emergency said that the injuries were
sustained by passengers of the bus and the
majority treated for whiplash.
Last August 13, days after the commencement
of the service, the train hit a vehicle
carrying three people who had to be taken to
the San Vincente de Paúl hospital in
Heredia, where they were treated for minor
injuries.
Aside from the two accidents with vehicles,
the train service has also been interrupted
for derailment in Tibás and a demonstration
not related to the train.
The main problem facing drivers and the
train are the lack of gates and alarms at
railway crossings and that drivers are not
accustomed to the train running on tracks
that have been dormant for decades.
The other factor which has contributed to
accidents involving the train and vehicles
on the Pavas and now Heredia line, is
drivers trying to outrun an oncoming train
or worse, stopping on train tracks in
traffic congestion. |
