Zelaya
To Join Torch Relay To Mark Central
America's Independence
Managua - Ousted Honduran
President Manuel Zelaya will participate in
a torch relay to mark Central America's
independence, a Nicaraguan official said
Monday.
Nicaraguan Education Minister Miguel de
Castilla said the Liberty Torch, symbol of
Central America's independence from Spain in
1821, will arrive on Sept. 9 in Nicaragua's
Corinto Port, some 140 km west to Managua.
In Nicaragua, Salvadorian President Mauricio
Funes will pass the torch to Zelaya, who
later will pass it to Nicaraguan President
Daniel Ortega.
The torch will travel by sea to Nicaragua in
order to bypass Honduran territory in
protest against the June 28 coup which
ousted Zelaya. |
