Supporters of
Nicaragua's president say the U.S.
ambassador should be declared "persona
non-grata" for criticizing a Supreme Court
ruling allowing Daniel Ortega to seek
re-election.
Labor leader Gustavo Porras called
Ambassador Robert Callahan's comments an
intrusion, saying, "He should leave
Nicaragua."
Porras spoke
Thursday outside the U.S. Embassy in
Nicaragua's capital, where several hundred
protesters waved red flags and set off
firecrackers.
Callahan said
Wednesday that the Supreme Court decision
overturning a ban on consecutive re-election
could undermine "the foundations of
Nicaragua's democracy."
Opponents call the
ruling by a panel of Ortega-aligned justices
illegal.
