Brazilian Air Force Plane Disappears in Amazon

RIO DE JANEIRO – A propeller-driven Brazilian air force plane with 11 people on board disappeared Thursday while it was flying in the Amazon region, the military said.

Air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft, a Cessna C-98 Caravan, Thursday morning when it was flying between the cities of Cruzeiro do Sul, in the state of Acre, and Tabatinga, in the state of Amazonas, the air force said in a communique.

In a second bulletin, the air force said that on board the plane were 11 people, most of them technicians with the Health Ministry who are participating in a vaccination campaign in the Amazon region.

The military dispatched two H-60 Black Hawk helicopters and a C-105 Amazonas aircraft to the region, as well as an R-99 reconnaissance plane to search for the missing Cessna.

The search operations are being coordinated from a base set up in Cruzeiro do Sul, the air force said.

The Cessna C-98 Caravan has a seating capacity of 14 and is normally used for transporting passengers and cargo relatively short distances. EFE
