El Salvador Tax Reform Urgent, Says Deputy

SAN SALVADOR - Public finance precariousness and struggle against poverty in El Salvador reveal the "urgent need" for a tax reform in the country, a national deputy said on Monday.

According to legislator Norma Guevara de Ramirios, it is necessary to establish selective taxes on activities that currently are not subject to them in this Central American nation.

"We also need to collect already decreed taxes well, as through decades we have lived in a reality of prevailing protectionist behaviour to benefit certain elite economic groups," she recalled.

We need to put an end to favouritism, as it erodes the State fiscal capacity when it comes to use resources to cater for the needs of the majorities.

If tax reforms currently under discussion are finally approved, this would improve the State capacity to respond to its obligations in social protection and investments, leading to a fall in the inherited fiscal deficit, said Guevara.ters are doing studies in Cuba as part of collaboration between the two nations.
