Zapote Chinamos Cool To The Offer
The municipalidad de San José, the Muni as
it is often referred to, held its auction on
Saturday for concessions to the annual
Zapote, but the turn out this year was poor.
So poor that a second auction will be held
on November 14th..
Typically the Zapote fair concession auction
are feverish, as potential concessionaires
or "chinamos" bid feverishly for the limited
number of sports. But that wasn't the case
at all this year.
The Muni reports that only 29 persons were
on hand to make offers and only one person
actually paying for a concession.
"Chinamos are an organized bunch, waiting
out for the second auction after the results
of the first", said Leonardo Araya,
president of the comisión de Festejos (Fair
committee).
In total 22 concessions were up for grabs
that included fair rides, food sales, games,
sanitary services and mega bars.
Only one person locked down one of the mega
bars that in the past have been the most
profitbale of the chinamos.
Araya would not confirm the possibility of a
"carnaval" for San José. The carnaval or
parades along Avenida Central had been a
tradition each December. The carnaval was
cancelled by the Muni for the last two
years, leaving only the traditional Tope
(horse parade).
The president of the comisión de Festejos
said that they were waiting on a sponsor
before any decision would be made on the
carnaval.
