Salvadorean Right Faces Disaster
SAN SALVADOR - After lossing the Salvadorean
Presidency last March, the Nationalist
Republican Alliance (ARENA) suffered a deep
crisis the more recent expression of which
is the defection of 12 deputies of this
right wing party.
The legislators decided to declare
themselves independent because they are in
disagreement with the Nationalist Executive
Council (COENA), the highest authority of
this organization.
"The Council does not represent us. They
fail to take into account people with
experience", said parliamentarian Guillermo
Gallegos, who demanded a COENA
refurbishment.
Gallegos also regretted the expulsion by the
Party of four departmental leaders who
supported their decision.
With the defection of the 12
parliamentarians, ARENA, which is the second
force in the unicameral congress after the
Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN),
decreases its representation from 32 to 20
seats.
ARENA was created in 1982 by Roberto
Daubisson, accused of been one of the
founders of the death squads and of being
involved in the assassination of Archbishop
Oscar Arnulfo Romero. This Alliance, which
was in power for 20 years, was defeated in
the elections by left-wing FMLN.
After the electoral failure, a series of
differences began within the party, leading
to its fracture, and this might even trigger
the emergence of another political force.
"It is difficult that ARENA will be able to
get on its feet. It all seems that a
different force is set to emerge, trying to
build a right wing alternative", FMLN deputy
Roberto Lorenzana said recently.
