Traffic Accident Deaths Continue To Lead

Costa Rica is piling traffic accidents
victims, the total number of of victims for
2008 was 354 according to the Atlas de
Mortalidad (Atlas of Mortality) presented on
Friday in San José, that categorizes all the
deaths occurred in the country between 2000
and 2007.
The 2008 accident death rate is higher,
according to the report, than the average
number of deaths due to infectious and
parasitic diseases.
The report indicates that in the area of the
Talamanca and Coto Brus (the southern zone)
the leading cause of deaths is from
diarrhea.
In Garabito (playas Jacó and Herradura) the
highest cause of deaths is suicide by men,
while in San Mateo de Orotina, women
committing suicide lead the incidence of
deaths.
Overall, cancer is still the leading cause
of deaths in the country, according to the
Atlas.
The Atlas de Mortalidad does not explain the
reasons why each province and canton has a
leading different type of death. That,
according to the report, that must be
discovered by further research.
The Atlas de Mortalidad was prepared by the
Universidad de Costa Rica and the Caja
Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) and
made public by Rosa Climent Martin,
president of the Caja.
