Fishman Presidential Candidacy Official
Luis Fishman is now the official
presidential candidate for the Partido
Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC), a party that
was left without a leader on October 5 when
Rafael Angel Calderón was sentenced to
prison for embezzlement and fraud.
Fishman, who is also the party president and
a strong supporter of Calderón, had said he
would not seek the party leadership and
hinted at the possibility of the party not
fielding a candidate in the 2010 election.
La Unidad, the name that the party is now
using instead of the traditional PUSC, had
been the alternative to the Partido
Liberación Nacional (PLN), alternating power
between them for decades until the rise of
the Partito Acción Cuidadana (PAC). which
lost the presidency in 2006 by only a slight
margin.
On Saturday, Fishman also announced his
running mates for the vice-presidency, Iris
Zamora Zumbado and Humberto Vargas Corrales.
Fishman told the members of the PUSC
national assembly gathered at the Tobogán on
Saturday that his decision to take on the
party leadership was for the unity of the
party.
"The challenge is very difficult and with
precedents, but I assume it humbly and with
pride", said Fishman, who took the
opportunity to remind everyone that the PUSC
is still the second largest party in the
country.
Fishman, will square off in Ottón Solís and
Laura Chinchilla, among others for the
presidential chair.
