Teachers To Go On Strike Tuesday
It's official, teachers will go on strike on
Tuesday, October 20, to force the Ministerio
de Educación Pública (MEP) to put an end to
the "permanent uneasiness" with the payment
schedule to teachers.
The strike call was made by the teachers
union Asociación de Profesores de Segunda
Enseñanza (APSE), while the Sindicato de
Trabajadores de la Educación Costarricense
(SEC) and the Asociación Nacional de
Educadores (ANDE), will announce their
decision on Monday.
The three unions represent the major part of
all teachers in the country.
"We demand that the MEP give their educators
a breakdown of all their pay each 'quincena'
(semi-monthly pay period), as it is our
right and obligation of the employer", said
the APSE statement declaring the strike
action.
In the statement, the APSE union is clear
that it only wants the government to take
responsibility and fulfill its commitment to
the teachers, paying them in full in each
pay period.
The problems with the pay at the MEP has
been the source of dissatisfaction by the
teachers for years.
The strike call is one day ahead of the
professional break by the ANDE national
assembly that begins on Wednesday and runs
until Saturday has some 50.000 teachers from
all over the country invited to attend.
In effect, it the ANDE and the SEC join the
APSE strike action, the only day that
schools will be open this week is on Monday.
