Two Tons of
Cocaine Seized in Panama, 3 Colombians Held
PANAMA – Anti-drug authorities in Panama
seized 2 tons of cocaine hidden on a ship
and arrested three Colombians and a
Panamanian linked to the illegal cargo,
officials said Saturday.
The commissioner of the National Police’s
DIJ investigations unit, Javier Carrillo,
said that the drug confiscated Friday was
hidden on a vessel with a double hull that
was docked in the port of Colon on the
Caribbean, 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of
this capital.
On the Panamanian-flag ship “Divana,”
authorities found 80 bags containing 2,000
packs of cocaine and arrested the crew, who
are under investigation, prosecutor Victor
Quijada told reporters.
He said that Panamanian authorities had
received an international alert that the
“Divana” had a double hull and was carrying
a considerable stash of drugs.
The 2 tons of cocaine were taken Friday
night from Colon to the Panamanian capital,
where they were impounded in a National
Police storeroom.
The vessel transported cargoes on the route
between a Panamanian town on the Colombian
border and Colon.
Authorities are investigating the origin and
final destination of the narcotics and
whether other people were involved in
shipping the drug besides the four who were
arrested.
