Zelaya's
Followers Wait For Solution To Crisis As
Deadline Expires
TEGUCIGALPA - Supporters of Honduras' ousted
president Manuel Zelaya on Friday were
waiting for a solution to the country's
political crisis outside a hotel where talks
between the conflicting sides were held.
"Here we are in the street waiting for the
crisis to finish today," said Juan Barahona,
coordinator of the Honduran National
Resistance against the Coup.
According to Barahona, there are no other
solutions to the crisis but the restitution
of Zelaya.
Zelaya's negotiation team announced on
Thursday that they would issue a final
declaration as the deadline for reaching an
agreement expired on Friday.
Representatives of both Zelaya and de facto
leader Roberto Micheletti on Wednesday
agreed on a proposal on Zelaya's
reinstatement.
However, the proposal has to be negotiated
by the two leaders before a final decision
is made.
Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
called on nations of the Bolivarian Alliance
of the Americas (ALBA) to oppose the coup in
Honduras because it posed a "threat" to the
whole Latin American region.
At the opening ceremony of the 7th ALBA
summit in Cochabamba, Bolivia, Chavez said
the bloc "has to seek more sever measures
against the coup in Honduras."
