Colombia Beefs Up Border Troops

BOGOTA - Colombian Military Forces Commander, Gen. Freddy Padilla, told journalists on Wednesday that the increase in the number of troops in the border with Ecuador is a response to an Ecuadorean Government request.

Padilla said that the request, aimed at controlling the presence of illegal armed groups, proves Quito's seriousness in complying with current international agreements.

Local media quoted Padilla as saying that neighbour countries can be calm, as these military forces will only be used in the borders to attack drug traffickers and guerrillas operating in those areas.
