Havoc in Guatemala As Motorist Drives Through Protesters

GUATEMALA  - Guatemalan authorities say a motorist opened fire on a group of Indian protesters who were blocking streets near the capital, killing a 19-year-old demonstrator and wounding two others.

About 20,000 people blocked several highways and roads leading to Guatemala City on Monday.

Members of various social organisations were protesting against Columbus Day and what they consider an unfair exploitation of natural resources such as mining and hydroelectricity in Mixco, on the outskirts of Guatemala City.

Protesters were also demanding access to land and marking Dia de la Raza, or "Day of the Race".

Columbus Day celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas.

Día de la Raza in many countries is seen as a counter to Columbus Day.

It is used to resist the arrival of Europeans to the Americas and is used to celebrate the native races.

Witnesses told radio station, Sonora, that a man trying to drive his car through the demonstration shot at the crowd.
