14 Nicaraguans Brave The San Juan To Cross Into Costa Rica

A joint operation by police and immigration authorities disbanded a "coyote" network in the Northern Zone that were responsible for the illegal entry of 14 Nicaraguans, five of which were children and an elderly woman of 72 years of age.

Costa Rican authorities say the group had been travelling for the last four days, two of which were without food, as they made their way through the river San Juan with a a final destination of Boca San Carlos and Pital.

The immigrants told authorities that they had spent at least 10 hours in the river following their leader and his attempts to avoid police control posts in the area, to reach Pital where a small bus was waiting for them.

All fourteen immigrants and at least one of the "coyotes" were being held at the fiscalía de Ciudad Quesada (San Carlos) awaiting a hearing and extradition.
