Carnavales de Limón Back On
The Carnavales de Limón are back on again,
with the ministra de Salud, María Luisa
Ávila, giving the approval Saturday
afternoon after meeting with carnival
organizers and inspections by her officials
to determine if the problems detected were
corrected.
The Limón carnival kicked off on Thursday,
but suspended Friday afternoon after the
ministerio de Salud noted a series of
non-compliances that would place visitors at
risk.
The problems included poor or lack of refuse
containers, public bathrooms and security.
Saturday morning the tope - the traditional
horse parade - took place even tough there
were no permits, as the beasts took over the
centre of Limón, with thousands showing up
to see the event.
The Limón carnival has been cancelled for
two years in a row, in 2007 for problems
with garbage collection and Dengue and last
year for the high rate of Dengue in the
area.
The ministerio de Salud earlier this week
gave permission to hold this year's
traditional carnival after analyzing the
AH1N1 problem that cancelled the "romeria"
in August.
Ministra Avila said that the AH1N1 flu virus
would not pose a health risk and gave the go
ahead. Salud officials, however, kept a
close eye on the event, forcing the
suspension on Friday. |
