Cancer Prevention Run A Success
Saturday morning more than 1.000 women began
their day in front of the Iglesia de la
Merced in San José to walk to La Sabana
park, while hundreds more around San José,
walked or ran to participate in the
activities against breast cancer that was
programmed by the Fundación Ana Ross.
All wearing pink or red t-shirts they
participated in the month long activities in
prevention of breast cancer.
The official number by the foundation
created by Dr. Ana Gabriela Ross was 1.200
registrations. However, hundreds more showed
up at the event just to give support.
The centre of the activity was on the south
east end of the Park, immediately west of
the Gimnasio Nacional, where music and
exercise combined with promoters of the
event to explain their efforts in the fight
against breast cancer, some providing free
sample products.
Taking part in the walk/run were homemakers,
lawyers, doctors, businesswomen, politicians
among others. Presidential candidate for the
Liberación Nacional party, Laura Chinchilla,
was out early accompanied by legislator
Maurren Ballesteros and legislative
candidate, Alicia Fournier.
"We need a beginning for this important
cause, many lives are lost in Costa Rica to
breast cancer, both men and women", said
Chinchilla.
According to figures by the Ministerio de
Salud, each year 284 lives are lost in Costa
Rica to breast cancer. The Registro Nacional
de Tumores and the projections of the Centro
Centroamericano de Población de la UCR, that
number will increase to 371 by the year
2016.
Although the main centre of activity was the
Sabana park, other smaller activities were
ongoing in various parts of San José.
More are planned for the coming weekends,
like the "Rosa" campaign being promoted by
the Automercado supermarket chain, who will
be holding their activity next Saturday
(October 19) at their "Atlantis" Escazú
store.
