FARC Guerrillas Kill 3 in Central Colombia
BOGOTA – FARC guerrillas killed three
people, including a toddler, and wounded a
young woman during an attack on a hamlet in
central Colombia, the victims’ relatives
said Wednesday.
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or
FARC, rebels used grenades and firearms in
the attack on the ranch where the victims
were sleeping.
The attack occurred around 4:00 a.m. Tuesday
in a remote area outside Colombia, a city in
Huila province.
Rancher Carlos Cruz, 50, his son, Juan
Carlos, and granddaughter, Karen Yulieth, 2,
were killed and a young woman was wounded in
the crossfire.
“They (the guerrillas) arrived at the house,
beat on and knocked down the door. They
threw grenades and opened fire,” Cruz’s
wife, Leidy Cardozo, told reporters.
Cardozo and two of her children escaped by
going down the side of a mountain in the
dark.
A milk truck took the victims’ bodies to the
coroner’s office in the city.
“We had to move the bodies because the army
did not come. It finally arrived at one in
the afternoon when we were returning,” a
relative of the slain rancher told Huila’s
La Nacion newspaper.
Residents said FARC guerrillas tried to
kidnap municipal council member Luis Ignacio
Chacon last Saturday in Potrero Grande, an
area outside the city, but peasants foiled
the abduction attempt. EFE
