2010
Presidential Campaign Now Official
Now that the 2010 presidential elections is
official, what can voters expect from the
candidates? Promises on security, jobs and
honesty, is the answer by the experts,
though it won't be known until after the
elections if the elected will keep the
promises.
The verdict in the Caja-Fischel trial and
the surprising guilty sentence of former
president Rafael Angel Calderón is surely to
have an impact on the candidates.
As well candidates will focus on the idea of
eliminating God from the constitutional
oath.
The Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE)
officially kicked off the campaign yesterday
that will end with a vote on February 7,
2010, in an election that will surely see
many Costa Ricans demanding an end to
corruption, more security and more jobs from
the candidates.
In an informal poll by the Al Día, many say
that the president should be "an honest and
sincere person", many adding that they don't
see any of the current candidates with those
qualities.
One said that Calderón is gone, but there
are still many others that have to go.
Present during the officials campaign launch
ceremonies were all of the candidates, minus
one: Ottón Solís, of the PAC.
Laura Chinchilla the front runner and
favourite to take the vote on February 7,
stood beside her competition, Otto Guevara
of the Movimiento Libertarion, who is
expected to pick up a great deal of the PUSC
votes now that Calderón is out of the
political picture.
For his part, president Oscar Arias has said
he will stay neutral during the campaign.
Arias got himself in a pickle in the past
year displaying his favouritism for Laura,
his first vice-president in the current
administration. The comment "Costa Rica is
ready for a woman president" last year made
waves.
Luis Antonio Sobrado, president of the TSE,
called on all citizens to take part an
active part in the campaign and to exercise
their democratic right and vote.
