Armed Forces Weapons from Argentina, Venezuela, Peru Found in Colombia

BOGOTA – Colombian police found in the southwestern province of Nariño a cache of 24 rifles, four machine-guns, cartridge clips and bullets with the stamp of the Argentine, Peruvian and Venezuelan armed forces on them, officials said Saturday.

Nariño police chief Col. William Montezuma told reporters that the arms “are stamped as being for the exclusive use of the armed forces of either Venezuela, Argentina or Peru.”

The arsenal was found underground in the rural area of El Ejido, a hamlet belonging to the town of Policarpa, some 700 kilometers (435 miles) southwest of Bogota.

According to police officials, three people from the drug-trafficking organization “Aguilas Negras” (Black Eagles) turned themselves in voluntarily and initially handed over three rifles and a pistol.

Later the location of the cache was found with the rifles that included models R-15, Ak-47, Fal, G-3 and 7.62 caliber Sniper, the officials said.

The rifles, machine-guns and 360 bullets confiscated, together with the three men, were handed over to the Attorney General’s Office.
