Colombian Gets 15 Years for Fathering 7 Kids
with Daughter
Bogota – A Colombian judge sentenced a man
called “the monster of Mariquita” to 15
years and seven months in jail for abusing
his daughter for three decades and fathering
seven children with her, the media said
Friday.
Arcadio Alvarez Quintero was sentenced by a
municipal judge in Fresno in the southern
province of Tolima for the crimes of incest
and aggravated rape.
The March arrest of Alvarez, a resident of
Mariquita, a town some 200 kilometers (124
miles) from Bogota, was possible thanks to a
complaint filed by his daughter Alba Nidia,
who decided to flee the family home after 30
years of sexual abuse and 14 pregnancies.
Investigators found that the abuse and
humiliation began after Alvarez’s wife died,
when Alba Nidia was barely 5 years old.
This case has been compared with that of the
Austrian Josef Fritzl, sentenced to life
imprisonment for keeping in a basement and
abusing for 24 years his daughter Elisabeth,
with whom he had seven children.
Though at first “the monster of Mariquita”
claimed he was innocent, during the final
hearing in the case he pleaded guilty and
apologized to his daughter and the children
he fathered with her.
Alvarez’s defense appealed the sentence
before the court in Ibague, capital of
