Unclaimed Impounded Vehicles To Be Donated,
Says MOPT MInister
The 300 or so confiscated vehicles sitting
unclaimed at the Tránsito impound lots will
be donated to various institutions, said the
ministra de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT),
Karla González.
The vehicles, for one reason or another,
were impounded by Tránsito (officials) and
left behind by their owners to rust in the
various Tránsito impound lots around San
José.
MOPT officials said they have done their
best to located the owners of the vehicles,
including placing ads in the local
newspapers and the most important, notice in
the La Gaceta.
But no one came forward to claim the 300
vehicles by the September 24th deadline.
One vehicle has been in the lot for almost
30 years, due to problems in the old
Tránsito laws that made the process of
disposing of impounded vehicles virtually
impossible.
The clean up, if you will, is based on the
new Ley de Tránsito that went into effect
last December.
The ministra said that state institutions
like the IMAS, colleges and other social
groups will be benefiting from the donation.
Only the registered owner of the vehicle can
claim and retrieve an impounded vehicle from
an impound lot.
The complication in retrieving an impounded
vehicle comes when the current owner of the
vehicle is not the title holder.
In other cases, the fines and surcharges
faced by the owner of the vehicle is much
greater the vehicle's worth or the ability
of the owner to pay.
Ministra González said that the donation
will be made next week.
