Nicaragua's
Political Divides Raise
Tension Among Journalists
Managua -
The ideological divide has resulted in
constant attacks between journalists who
support and oppose President Daniel Ortega,
Inter Press Service (IPS) reports. The
tensions have intensified since last year,
when several journalists were attacked and
blocked from covering local elections.
Two parallel events in Managua this week
illustrated such divisions. At the
Sandinista Journalists Forum, participants
discussed the need to "confront the media
dictatorship," and resist the "oligarchy's
broadcasting apparatus," La Prensa explains.
The same day, at the forum "Social
Commitment of Journalists," members of
several independent media criticized the
"dictatorial pretensions" of Ortega and
warned that "to aspire to control [the
nation's press] would be to diminish
democracy and freedom of expression, El
Nuevo Diario adds.
Scholar Mario Medrano, quoted by IPS, said,
"Real journalism is being sacrificed for
political and party interests and is falling
into a game of propaganda and
counter-propaganda by one side against the
other, which is not conducive to the
country's social stability and economic
