OAS Advance Party Arrives In Honduras

Tegucigalpa - An advance party representing the Organization of American States arrived on Friday in Honduras' capital, Tegucigalpa, to open discussions and prepare for a later planned visit by OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza due Oct.7

"We are very happy to be here in Honduras," said Victor Rico, the delegation's spokesman. "We have come with the best of intentions to collaborate, to support the construction of a positive dialogue for Honduras," he said.

The committee has the same membership as the one that was halted at Tegucigalpa's international airport, Toncontin. It will now meet up with John Biehl, the advisor to OAS secretary general in Uruguay.

"The idea is to continue the process which had begun: to continue dialogue," Rico told media. This committee will draft the agenda for the foreign ministers who will visit next week.

Next week's visit will be the second by foreign ministers to Honduras. During the first, on Aug. 24, ministers failed to achieve their goal after meeting with the nation's legislature, judiciary and executive.

In August, the committee's members were Argentina's Jorge Taiana; Canada's Peter Kenneth, Costa Rica's Bruno Stagno, Jamaica's Kenneth Baugh, Mexico's Patricia Espinoza, and Panama's Juan Carlos Varela.
