Calderón
Takes His Legal Battle To The Media
The verdict is only days away and former
president, Rafael Angel Calderón, is not
leaving his freedom to chance, using the
media to get his message to the judges and
support of the public in his favour, in case
the judges don't bite.
The former president has taken out daily
full page ads in the print media explaining
his position, his action and what he thinks
is fair and just.
But, most important, he explains that he has
done nothing illegal in what he calls part
of the natural course of business of a
private individual.
Calderón and seven others faced a lengthy
trial on charges of embezzlement and fraud
in the Caja-Fischel case, where a part of
the money from a loan from the government of
Finland to purchase medical equipment by the
Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS or
Caja) - Costa Rica's social security - ended
up in the pockets of Calderón and others in
an elaborate scheme, with Calderón the
mastermind.
On trial are also the former president and
managers of the Caja and former president
and legal advisors to the Fischel
Corporation, Costa Rica's largest chain of
phamarcy stores.
The verdict by the three judge panel is
expected to be handed down on Monday,
October 5, at 2:30pm, two days before the
official start of the presidential elections
campaign, which Calderón is seeking
re-election as the candidate for the PUSC
