Take San José On Sunday, First Of Year End
Parades
Tens of thousands were on hand Sunday in
downtown San José, under the hot sun, for
the 13th annual "desfile de boyeros" (ox
parade), where some 350 "boyeros"
participated.
The parade was not only one to be seen from
behind the lines, but up close and personal
with the ox and their owners. Children could
be seen touching and petting the ox, some
even got to ride an ox or in the ox cart.
The parade began on the east side of the
Sabana park, where the ox lined up for their
place in line to stroll down Paseo Colón,
unto Avenida Segunda and ending up in Plaza
Viquez.
The boyeros parade kicks off the annual
Christmas parade season, with the
illumination of the Museo de Los Niños on
Tuesday and the lighting of the Christmas
tree in front of the Hospital de Niños on
Thursday.
Following in the coming weeks is the
decoration of the downtown core by the Coca
Cola company's traditional Christmas tree
and the Festival de la Luz (Light Festival).
The Christmas parades includes the
traditional "tope" - horse parade - on
December 25. It is yet unknown if the "carnaval"
(parade of December 26) will be held this
year or be cancelled like the last couple of
years due to lack of sponsors for the event.
The Christmas holiday season also includes
the traditional Zapote Fair that starts on
Christmas Day and the tradition of the bull
fights.
This year, the Zapote Fair will be holding
the bull even early on December 5 and 6.
