Panamanian Consumers under Pressure of Basic Food

PANAMA - Panamanian consumers are under growing stress due to the upward trend in the price of the basic food basket in contrast with their minimum wage. At the moment, the cost of the basic food basket rises to us$261.21 dollars, according to the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

Compared with same period seven years ago, there is an increase of 41.2 percent, the official stats show.

The Panamanian government is planning to implement measures to reduce basic food costs, among them the creation of what it calls "cool chain", a network of cooling storages with the aim to preserving perishable products.

Other measures are a raise of the minimal wage and a cut of the electricity bill.
