Ruling Party Candidate Santos Accepts Defeat
In Honduras Election
TEGUCIGALPA - Presidential candidate of the
Ruling Liberal Party Elvin Santos accepted
midnight Sunday his defeat in the general
election of Honduras. During a brief speech,
broadcast by national TV and radio stations,
Santos said that he accepted his defeat
because "the winner in these elections was
the democracy and the Honduran people who
defended it attending to vote."
Santos added that "today (Sunday) a new
stage is inaugurated in which we will
continue participating with all our energy."
Santos also urged his followers to be part
of the national unity "to assure the victory
of the Honduran people."
Santos called on his followers to accept the
defeat and continue working with the winning
party of the election to work in favor of
this Central American country.
So far, 65 percent of the votes have been
counted, with presidential candidate of the
opposition National Party, Porfirio Lobo,
winning 56 percent of the vote, well ahead
of second-placed Santos with 38 percent.
More than 4.6 million Honduran were summoned
on Sunday to choose the next president,
three vice presidents, deputies to the
National Congress, deputies to the Central
American Parliament (Parlacen) and mayors.
Sunday's vote came five months after former
Honduras President Manuel Zelaya was toppled
in a June coup.
Neither Zelaya nor interim leader Roberto
Micheletti took part in the presidential
race.
