55.000 Ticos Expected To Spend Christmas
Away From Home
Christmas and New Years in Costa Rica is a
time for family, a visit to the beach and
resort or just hang around San José.
However, according to the Dirección de
Migración y Extranjería (immigration
service) at least 55.000 Costa Ricans won't
be spending Christmas and New Years at home.
Migración says that this year it expects
more than last year's 52.000 Ticos to leave
Costa Rica during the holiday season.
The immigration service says it is currently
handing over some 540 new passports daily.
Travel agents report that the favourite
destinations for Ticos is Orlando
(Disneyworld), Miami and Los Angeles in the
US and the beaches of San Andrés, Cartagena
(Colombia), Veradero (Cuba) and Punta Cana
(Dominican Republic).
Many take advantage of the year break from
work and the school vacation of their
children. This year the exodus for Ticos is
expected around the 19th of December, as
government offices and agencies, as many
private businesses closed down for the year
end holiday season and reopen again on
January 4.
