Second Wave Of The AH1N1
The ministerio de Salud said that it would
be investing us$18 million dollars in an
effort to fight the second wave of AH1N1 flu
expected to hit the country as early January
2010.
Ministra Marķa Luisa Avila said on Thursday
that the Caja Costarricense de Seguridad
Social (CCSS) - Social Security -
would purchase 30 X-ray machines, 97 fans,
and 18,000 Tamiflu (oseltamivir) treatment
dosages for patients who need it.
It would also buy 70 refrigerators to store
200,000 AH1N1 vaccines expected to arrive in
Costa Rica in the coming week.
The vaccine doses are being supplied by the
Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and
will be distributed free of charge to the
population, with those in the high risk
group at the top of the list and then the
rest when the other 700.000 plus doses are
expected next year.
Costa Rica had requested 1.9 million doses.
However, the PAHO has allotted only 900.000
to Costa Rica.
CCSS president Eduardo Doryan said
that some 227 new jobs would be created as
the country was to strengthen patient
supervision and improve patient care for the
flu pandemic.
So far this year, Costa Rica has reported 40
