Zelaya: USA Backs Honduran Putschists

TEGUCIGALPA - Constitutional President of Honduras Jose Manuel Zelaya said on Thursday that the United States is supporting the de facto regime of the putschists and reiterated that he will not recognize the results of the elections on Sunday, November 29.

In an interview for Brazilian UOL Noticias website, Zelaya said that "the United States is not only supporting the elections, but also the de facto regime, the dictatorship, the putschists' regime."

A coup on June 28 not only took Zelaya away of the presidency but also of the country. On September 21, he returned to Tegucigalpa and has been in the Brazilian Embassy in Honduras since then.

In this regard, Zelaya said he will remain in the said facility as long as Brazil allows him to.

The Brazilian government said that no date has been set for Zelaya to leave the diplomatic mission, where he can stay for as long as it is necessary. Zelaya said he will impugn Sunday elections because when legal order and constitutional order is broken by a coup, no process can be legalized under this condition.

Therefore, "if a dictatorship promotes, runs, coordinates and election, it becomes illegal. It is a precedent that had never been set in Latin America, which already witnessed 80 coups, but they culminated in a new Constitution, not in an illegitimate call for elections, like this."
