Central America:1,500 Women Killed this Year

SAN SALVADOR - Central America is the region where violence against women is most frequent: more than 1,500 women were murdered this year, reported many international organizations.

More than 511 Salvadoran women have been murdered in 2009, while there have been registered 5,000 cases of intra-family violence from January to September this year, said the President Mauricio Funes.

On the other hand, 34 Costa Rican women have died because of the gender-based violence, while there have been more than 500 crimes of that kind in Guatemala.

The United Nations launched on Wednesday a Latin American campaign to fight against that kind of aggressions, in the International Day Against Violence Against Women.

Women organizations demonstrated also in El Salvador, Costa Rica and Panama against gender-based violence.

President of El Salvador promised to fight against murder of women, sexual abuse and inequalities in that country.

He also said that his policy remarks on that subject will be focuses on the slogan "zero-tolerance toward violations of women rights".
