Costa Rica Looking To Recover Iguana
Populations
(InfoWeb Press) The iguana is a reptile that
is catalogued as an endangered species in
lieu of the fact that in some parts of the
country its meat is consumed; also its skin
is used in the creation of delicate pieces
for personal use, like shoes, wallets, and
handbags.
Aside from that, some private initiatives
are trying to reproduce the iguana in
captivity with the purpose of elevating the
quantity of specimens. The green iguanas are
oviparous and the more prolific species of
all the lizards of Costa Rica.
It is a herbivore species and its diet
includes a great variety of soft leaves of
different species of trees and vines from
the forest. The young iguanas are prey to
many predators like snakes, birds, mammals
and other lizards.
The iguana is distributed throughout the
length of the lower lands on both coasts;
they do not go over the 600 meter altitude
and these daytime lizards are generally
associated with rivers and lakes.
The adults lie on the branches of trees that
are above water, to jump into this, encase
there is any type of threat present. This
happens in different areas that go from the
dry tropical forest, to the very humid
tropical areas.
