Government Announces Aguinaldo Payment To Be
On December 8
The government announced on Friday that it
will pay the Aguinaldo - the Christmas bonus
- on December 8 to all central government
workers and pensioners.
The government will be handing over ¢102
billion colones with respect to the
Aguinaldo payment.
The ministra de Hacienda (Revenue minister),
Jenny Phillips, said the government has the
funds to pay the Aguinaldo, alleviating
fears raised last month when government
sources said that the state coffers were
empty and that there was a possibility that
the central government would not be able to
meet its obligations.
Under Costa Rican law, the government is not
permitted to take out loans or increase its
debt to meet salary and bonus obligations.
The central government workers include all
workers of the various ministerios, Podel
Judicial, Asemblea Legislativa, the
Defensoría de los Habitantes, the Tribunal
Supremo de Elecciones and the Contraloría
General de la República.
Workers of state institutions and agencies
are not included in that amount, as each
institution is required to pay the Aguinaldo
to its respective workers.
