Police Seize 688 Kilos of Cocaine, Over $1
Million in Panama
PANAMA – Panamanian drug enforcement agents
seized 688 kilos of cocaine and more than $1
million in cash, and arrested eight suspects
over the weekend, a prosecutor said.
The cocaine, cash and five vehicles were
seized from six Panamanians and two Arabs
during searches of three residences, two of
which are located in the capital and the
other in Chitre, a city in the central
province of Herrera, prosecutor Javier
Carballo, who handles drug cases, said.
The cocaine and the nearly $1.25 million in
cash belonged to a drug gang that operated
in different parts of Panama, Carballo said.
Investigators are trying to determine if
more people were involved with the gang.
Separate operations on Friday and Saturday
netted more than one ton of cocaine and
resulted in the arrests of four Panamanians
and a Colombian, Carballo said.
Police seized 724 kilos of drugs in
Saturday’s operation on Casaya, an island in
Panama’s Pacific archipelago of Las Perlas.
A Colombian guarding the drugs – 690 kilos
of cocaine and 33 kilos of heroin – was
arrested and a boat was seized, Carballo
said.
The other operation, which took place Friday
in Chepo, a town located 57 kilometers (35
miles) east of Panama City, resulted in the
seizure of 355 kilos of cocaine being
smuggled in a boat with a double bottom that
was being towed by a vehicle.
Four Panamanians were arrested in that
operation. EFE |
