Lynching on the Rise in Guatemala

GUATEMALA - The imposition of the law into one´s own hands in Guatemala worries the authorities because even now it is observed a rise regarding last year.

An article published on Monday by Prensa Libre states that in many internal departments there are registered 15 lynching of alleged extortionists, thieving, rapists, murderers and kidnapers, when it left only one and a half month to 2009 end.

It cites Presidential Committee on Human Rights numbers in 2008, when 12 people died the same way, which includes cruel methods as burning people alive. The text said that according to non-official sources, there are lynching because people do not believe in justice and police.

They impose those punishments because they are tired of so much unsafe and competent organization do not solve their cases, said the press report, which includes actions occurred in department such as Huehuetenango and Quiché.
